6 Common Furnace Issues and How to Deal With It

In this article, we’ll cover 6 of the most common furnace issues you may be experiencing along with some heating maintenance you may be able to do on your own.

Sometimes doing furnace or heating repairs can be too complicated or dangerous to conduct on your own. In these cases, it’s best to call the specialists at Crestway HVAC to handle all your furnace repairs in Ottawa.

Furnace Is Not Producing Heat

If you have already checked that your system is on and set to “heat” and it’s still not producing any warmth, there could be a range of issues occurring. If you try turning the dial up or down a few degrees and there are still no changes, it could be that a circuit breaker or fuse was tripped or blown. You can do one last check with your breaker to make sure the switch is on by flipping it back and forth.

If you’re still having issues past this point, you can easily call Crestway HVAC for furnace repairs in Ottawa. We are HVAC specialists and can help with any furnace issues you may be experiencing.

Furnace is Not Producing Enough Heat

This is another common furnace issue. When your furnace is not producing enough heat, as opposed to not working at all, there could be an obstruction restricting proper airflow. You will want to make sure your air filter isn’t dirty and acting as a barrier for airflow to enter your home. Checking and replacing your filter to make sure it’s clean can work wonders.

As you removed the filter from its place and inspect it, you may notice a few things indicating that it should be changed for a brand new one. If there is a dusty smell, the filter is gray in color, you can see dirt or dust built up, and if you hold the filter up to the light you can’t see very well through it, which could mean you need a new filter.

Furnace is too noisy or making a weird noise

There are a few different noises to keep an ear out for when it comes to furnace issues. If there is just an unusual amount of noise, there could be a few different causes. The noise may be a result of poorly insulated ductwork, an improperly adjusted pilot light, or the motor lubrication port needing oiling.

If there is a grinding or scraping noise, it could be that your ball bearings have been worn out. If this is the case you should turn off the unit immediately and call Crestway HVAC. This is a furnace issue that should be dealt with by a professional.

These are only a few of the many noises that can occur with your furnace. It can be difficult to tell which noise is a major furnace issue, so if you’re ever unsure, it’s better to be safe than sorry and contact the experts at Crestway HVAC.

Furnace Does Not Blow Air

This is a slightly different furnace issue than no heat production or minimal heat. If your furnace isn’t blowing air at all, it could be that you have a broken blower fan belt. In this case, you can take out the instructions in your owner’s manual and follow the directions to replace the belt. If you’re worried about damaging the furnace, you can always contact Crestway HVAC and we can do it for you. We have lots of experience with HVAC maintenance and replacements such as this.

Smelling Gas

Please act with extreme caution if you are smelling gas around your home or furnace. If you think there is a gas leak and the odor is very strong, you should immediately leave your home and contact professionals at your gas utility company.

Pilot Light or Ignition Issues

If you have an older furnace and the pilot light will not stay lit, there could be a multitude of reasons causing this that may require a specialist. It’s possible it could be a broken gas valve, the thermocouple is bent, or there are other mechanical issues. We strongly recommend contacting a professional during these cases. Gas is extremely flammable and there could be a gas build-up if your pilot light has been out for some time.
